Since donating my hair, I've had an obsession with attempting to grow my hair the longest I can in the fastest way. In a previous post, I made a wash-out oil treatment. This treatment has a lot of the same ingredients, but it's a daily leave-in spray. Let's get to it!
So obviously I didn't make enough to fill this spray bottle, but in my defense, I was going to use a smaller bottle.
2 bags - Camomile tea (make sure it's 100% camomile) or Peppermint tea
1/2 tbs - Dry Rosemary leaves
5 tsp - Lemon juice (from the bottle or the real thing) I added this to lighten my hair - you may skip it if you wish.
1 cup - water
(Just a side note, chamomile will lighten hair - especially if exposed to heat or sun.)
Heat up your water and put in into a cup or jar to steep with the two chamomile tea bags. Leave it be for now.
Take the Rosemary leaves and grind them as fine as possible. Of course, a mortar and pestle is so helpful with this step, but getting the leaves super fine isn't truly necessary. Let's go back to our steeped tea.
Now stir in the Rosemary leaves. I put this in a jar that I could shake but I don't think that's entirely necessary. Now I let this mixture sit for an entire day because I wanted the rosemary to steep as much as possible.
In order to get this to spray, I had to strain the rosemary from it before I placed it in its final bottle.
I really love this spray! Firstly, because it's super fast to apply; secondly, it feels really light and bright on. Personally, I added a touch of apple cider vinegar, and it smells really good too - even though I put vinegar in it.
Did this work for you?
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say. My hair tends to grow back really fast anyway, but I gained about five inches of hair in six months. It's probably some of the fastest growth I've had. I liked this treatment more for the lightening effect, for growth I preferred my leave-in treatment (http://afourthleaf.blogspot.com/2012/05/diy-natural-hair-lengthener.html)
DeleteI also recommend taking Biotin. It strengthens hair and nails and I think that's helped with my growth as well.
You should never ever leave lemon juice on your hair for extended periods of time. Doing so will lead to dryness, breaking, and lightening.
Deletei agree with Nicole even because chamomile should be enough to lighten your hair!!!
DeleteDoes this work?
ReplyDeleteI used other treatments in addition to this one such as my leave-in treatment (http://afourthleaf.blogspot.com/2012/05/diy-natural-hair-lengthener.html) as well as Biotin and I've had a lot of growth over half a year. In truth, I would probably recommend this one more for lightening hair though.
Deletehow long should i leave this in?
Deleteis it safe? does ur hair grows faster?
ReplyDeleteYes! This is a completely safe treatment unless you're allergic to any of the ingredients. As I said above though, if you will be in the sun a lot and don't want your hair to be even subtly lightened, I wouldn't use this.
DeleteI did use other treatments in addition to this one like my leave-in treatment (http://afourthleaf.blogspot.com/2012/05/diy-natural-hair-lengthener.html) and biotin, but my hair has grown a good five inches in six months.
Ca you use herbal tea instead on chamomile?
ReplyDeleteYou could for sure, but it really depends on what the ingredients are if it would be beneficial at all. I know peppermint is also good for hair though; that would smell very nice too! I only chose to use chamomile specifically because (in addition to it being good for your hair) I also wanted the subtle lightening effect.
DeleteAwesome thanks :)
Deletemy hair takes forever to grow, do u have any other recommendation!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of things I do to keep my hair healthy and growing. Always make sure to stimulate your scalp when you're brushing your hair, but don't brush too much! (Also, using a comb is typically better for your hair.) Take the vitamin Biotin, it strengthens your nails and hair. I also limit the amount of times I shampoo my hair to three to four times a week and I never put conditioner on my scalp (I grab my hair like it would be in a ponytail and condition only that.) I try to moisturize my hair at least once a month with this recipe: http://afourthleaf.blogspot.com/2012/05/diy-natural-hair-lengthener.html
DeleteHope this helps and good luck!
do you spray this on wet or dry hair?
ReplyDeleteI've used this on both wet and dry hair.
Deleteso if i shower in the mornings, spray this on wet hair and then blow dry my hair, would that work? or should i wait to spray it on after my hair is dry?
DeleteDo you put it in your hair at night and leave it all night or in the morning and leave it all day and repeat??
ReplyDeleteI used it in the morning, but I don't see why it couldn't be used at night.
DeleteWhat is the active ingredient in this?
ReplyDeleteThere isn't one active ingredient in this. Through some research I found that lemon juice, Chamomile and especially Rosemary have all been shown to increase hair production.
DeleteI am wondering if this REALLY works because I've been dying for long hair! (:
ReplyDeleteIf you really want to grow your hair out, I would recommend a variety of treatments to help. Like I mentioned in some of the comments above, taking Biotin daily is really helpful in addition to hair treatments like this one. These ingredients are known to increase hair health and production, and I think they were helpful in my own hair growth.
Deletecan I use rosemary essential oil?
ReplyDeleteI never thought about it, but I'm sure that would work very well.
DeleteAfter making this, do you have to leave the treatment in the fridge once it has sat? Or can u leave it out?
ReplyDeleteI leave mine out.
DeleteOkay thank you :)
DeleteI dont want to lighten the shade of my hair..... also i have long hair but i want them to be even longer and healthier........ Kindly suggest something for the same
ReplyDeleteThanks
Lemon juice and chamomile typically only lighten hair if you are under the sun or your hair is under any heat after you put it on. However, to be safe, you could just use a rosemary (or rosemary oil) and water.
DeleteStimulating the scalp increases circulation and encourages health growth.
ReplyDeleteCamomile and lemon juice both lighten hair.
I would recommend a scalp massage everyday, whether wet or dry.
Possible massage with something that tingles to encourage circulation.
Lemon Juice and vinegar... I wouldn't recommend for hair. Remember SunIn? It used to be sold in stores to "lighten hair" yourself. Basically lemon juice. If your hair is darker, you can end up with brassy tones in your hair. If you want to strip or lighten, lemon juice & vinegar are products you can use. Like stated in the last post, scalp massage will stimulate the follicles and "can" promote growth.
ReplyDeleteAverage hair growth is 1/2 of an inch every month. 5 inches of growth in 6 month is a little above the average but normal, in my little opinion.
For long hair, keep it clean, moisturize, protect from heat (styling= flat iron, curling iron, blow dryer).
I am trying it with peppermint tea. Why is peppermint good for your hair?
ReplyDeletePeppermint is thought to stimulate the scalp and promote hair growth, but I haven't used it before so I can't say for sure if it works.
DeleteThe pepper mint definitely made my hair grow and smelled great also! :)
DeleteI have been trying to grow out my hair since high school. I have really thin curly hair. I dyed my hair in high school and straighten it for 4 years. 3 years ago I have started wearing my hair curly and have used gardian products, and have used oil. I also eat very healthy. I have seen some growth but the ends of my hair are very brittle and look bad. I also still have about an inch or two of dye still in it. Maybe 1-3 times a year I curl or straighten my hair. My sisters wedding is this June and I really want my hair to grow. I just trimmed an inch or two earlier this morning. Its shorted then usual, Its a little past my shoulders. I really need help. I heard and read previous comments that biotin helps grow hair, but does it cause weight gain? Also how many times can I use your product in a day?
ReplyDeleteI would definitely recommend Biotin. (I haven't experienced weight gain with it.) As for using this mixture, lemon juice is harder on hair. If you make a mix omitting it, I imagine you could use it often. It may also help if you moisturize your hair with an oil treatment such as mine here: http://afourthleaf.blogspot.com/2012/05/diy-natural-hair-lengthener.html (again you can omit the lemon juice if you'd like)
DeleteCoconut oil treatments will strengthen and protect your hair. They sell it at the dollar store. It's like a gel. Massage it into your scalp every night and then wash in the morning and your hair will grow, become softer and silky, have a beautiful shine and become a lot stronger as well. I do this every other night but I did the every night when I first started for about two weeks.
DeleteMy curly hair was brittle too, until I went shampoo free over a year and a half ago. Check out my blog for my "I don't wash my hair" post, and the information about not using shampoo, it might help your hair.
Deleteok so I have super thick thick hair, it's kind of long and wavy. I still want it longer, would this help beings my hair is so thick? thanks
ReplyDeleteI can't see why not, but I cannot say for sure.
DeleteThanks for the post! Just wondering where you got your mortar and pestle?
ReplyDeleteI believe I found it at T.J. Maxx.
DeleteWhat dies the apple cidar vinegar help for
ReplyDeleteIt's known to cleanse things like oil and buildup of product from hair.
Deleteso, can i use this on my wet hair in the morning, then blow dry and style as usual? or is this something best left au natural?
ReplyDeleteWhen using lemon and chamomile, exposing it to heat will accelerate any lightening. If you don't use lemon juice and replace the chamomile with peppermint or even just water, I wouldn't think blow drying won't affect it.
DeleteThis is crap! While rosemary might stimulate the scalp, lemon and vinegar will dry out your ends. It doesn't matter how much your hair is growing if your dried out split ends are breaking off. As a hairstylist with over 10 years experience, and countless hours of continuing education, I would NEVER recommend a client do this.
ReplyDeleteI think different things work for different people. You have to know your hair. I wouldn't recommend lemon juice if your hair is fragile, but everyone's hair is different. Personally I suggest people figure out their hair type and see what woks for them. As far as vitamins like Biotin, you get way more result by eating foods rich in biotin as opposed to taking the pill. If you take pills, you pee most of it out. My reccommandation? Listen to a stylist that promotes hair HEALTH and learn what works on your hair. There are few tride and true methods that'll work for everyone.
DeleteActually, Apple cider vinegar is great for hair, but not full strength. More like 1:4 ratio cut with water. When I decided to go "no-poo" (stop using shampoo, as the slates are extremely harmful, particularly to my dry, curly, brittle hair), I would use baking soda as a clarifier(that u pay buku bucks for at a salon), but that opens up your hair cuticle, making it look "rough". I would rinse the baking soda out completely in cool/cold water, n follow up with an apple-cider (1:4) rinse to close the hair cuticle. My hair was soft n shiny, manageable.... How many curly-haired chicks that live in FLORIDA can really say that??
DeleteActually, Apple cider vinegar is great for hair, but not full strength. More like 1:4 ratio cut with water. DeleteCan you just skip the tea if you can't get your hands on any? If so, would it still be as effective for hair growth??
ReplyDeleteLeaving it out shouldn't effect it too much.
DeleteYou say it smells really good even though you put vinegar in it, but vinegar is not in the recipe. Or did I miss something?
ReplyDeleteWhoops, I edited this and I must have deleted it by mistake! However, it was an addition I just made for myself - it really wasn't in the actual "recipe" it was really optional. :)
Deleteapple cider vinegar is actually GREAT for your hair. It makes it shiny and does NOT dry it out AT ALL. I used to have very dry hair at the ends and oily at the roots and I wash with a homemade shampoo of rosemary essence (from steeping in hot water), baking soda, and apple cider vinegar. I used to wash my hair every day, now just twice a week usually!
ReplyDeleteI have tried Biotin and massage scalp treatments you name it, I've tried it. My hair grows thicker instead of longer. Genetics play a role in hair growth too. I know because my mom and grandmom had the same issues. I guess my body is strange, I took Biotin for a long time and my nails got more brittle. I guess it depends on the person.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree; genetics play a major role in how your hair grows.
DeleteI would definitely try this, but since I dye my hair brown with red base would chamomile make it lighter? (I don't want that)
ReplyDeleteAlso I have lots of split ends, what can I do to hey ride of them with out having to cut my hair?
Thank you
I would use peppermint tea instead if you're worried about it lightening your hair.
DeleteI'm afraid there isn't another way to get rid of split ends without cutting them off, however you can avoid them by keeping your hair healthy.
Chamomile n Rosemary are recommended for blondes n subtle blonde highlights. If your hair is of a darker persuasion, u can use sage instead. Lavender also smells great, n is a Godsend for calming an itchy, irritated scalp....
Deletehow often is this treatment supposed to be applied? you mentioned in earlier comments applying once a month but can it be done more often?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it will hurt your hair to apply it even once a week.
DeleteAs I saw in a previous comment it says apple cider vinegar is very good for your Hair so could I just put apple cider in my hair just by itself or could you please find me a hair recipe with apple cider vinegar? Please? I'm desparete either you could find me an apple cider vinegar recipe or any recipe for brittle burned Hair because I recently burned my Hair and now its really brittle and gross. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou can use apple cider vinegar as a rinse by itself, but as for helping burnt hair, I'm afraid I don't know what you can do. If your hair is burnt very badly, I'm not sure there is anything you can do.
Deletedo you spray this on all of your hair or just the scalp area?
ReplyDeleteI spray it all over.
DeleteI didnt use any treatment. My hair is just really burned damaged and brittle. Can u find a treatment for my hair that will help with all the above or just a few? I'm desperate! Please help!
ReplyDeleteIf your hair is really that bad you need to stop dying, curling, straightening, blow drying ect ASAP. Go get a good hair cut and take off all the split ends. Start eating lots of fruits and veggies, take vitamins like biotin, calcium, vitamin d. Or there are even hair, nail, and skin vitamins you can use in addition to your regular daily vitamin. And do not attack your hair when you brush it, and if you must have some style to your hair then go on youtube and look up ways to naturally get it that way instead of using harsh chemicals or heat. Like if you want curly/wavy hair, you can braid it at night when your hair is wet and then let it out. But your hair health has EVERYTHING to do with your diet and genetics.
DeleteBest thing to do to make hair healthy...stay away from heat tools or use heat protector spray, eat healthy foods. I also heard keep hair pulled back as it will increase circulation.
ReplyDeleteAlso they sell cholesterol for hair for like $3 at Sally's. Use a comb and gently scrape your scalp to get build up off and dry skin, Put the cholesterol on damp or dry hair and scalp, cover and let on hair for 30 minutes use a blow dryer to heat up. Then take off cap and massage head (feels wonderful if massaged by someone else:) ) wash out. Also smells GREAT N CLEAN! Makes hair very SOFT!
ReplyDeleteHi, is there a substitute for rosemary leaves.?? Because i don't have any rosemary and... can i use something as a substitute
ReplyDeleteSage and Lavender are also very good for hair. :)
Deletedo you spry it in your scalp or just spritz all over your hair? :)
ReplyDeleteYou'll want to spray it all over your hair.
DeleteHow long before you saw results and can I spray it on twice a day
DeleteIs this a subtle lightening effect or is it more dramatic? I have rather dark brown hair with some brassy tones in it that I'd like to lighten a little, but I don't want to suddenly be blonde or something, lol.
ReplyDeleteIn no way would this be dramatic lightening. The lemon juice could more dramatically lighten if it was exposed to heat/light, but it would still be subtle.
DeleteDo you apply this with wet or dry hair?? does it matter?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't hesitate to apply it to wet or dry hair.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteWould I be able to do this treatment every other day or do you just recommend once a month? How often did you do it? Thank you.
I don't think there is any reason you couldn't use this as often as you'd like or how often you feel is necessary for your hair.
DeleteDo you put it in wet hair or dry hair?
ReplyDeleteHow long is the spray good for?
I've put it in wet and dry hair. I wouldn't think it had an expiration per say; that being said, I wouldn't keep a large batch around for a very long time.
DeleteYOu have that other with coco nut oil...so i was thinking can i put coco nut oil to this recipe ???
ReplyDeleteIt would make your hair rather oily. I wouldn't use it in this leave-in recipe.
DeleteWhat if you were to use spearmint tea instead of peppermint?
ReplyDeleteAs long as it's minty, it should be fine!
DeleteIs there anything else I could add in there besides lemon..or applecider vinegar??
DeleteIt's perfectly alright to just leave them out if you'd like.
DeleteBut do you know of anything else that works well in hair growth too? :)
DeleteCienna, I haven't attempted to add anything else into this recipe, but I do suggest you try moisturizing with an oil recipe such as the one I have here: http://afourthleaf.blogspot.com/2012/05/diy-natural-hair-lengthener.html
ReplyDeleteDo you lightly spray this on your hair or do you soak your hair thanks.
ReplyDeleteSoak it into your hair especially concentrating at the scalp area.
DeleteThanks. I'm also trying it on my husband bald head to see if it works.
ReplyDeleteWith apple cider vinegar you want to dilute it with water. It helps balance your ph balance and I wouldn't use more than twice a month like a shampoo. As far as a growth stimuli mix a few drops of peppermint oil with rosemary oil with the tea or with jojoba oil and massage in scalp a few times a week at night.
ReplyDeleteI've tried copying and pasting your link for your oil rinse out treatment but it won't access it :(
ReplyDeleteJust take a look through my blog's archive, and you should be able to find the post. :)
DeleteI just made this spray, & I'm wondering if I was to put pure peppermint oil into this mixture...how much do you recommend? Thanks! (& I'm also a donator & recently started taking Biotin as well)
ReplyDeleteNot having added peppermint oil to mine, I have to guesstimate. But I think I would try a teaspoon and, of course, adjust if it's too strong or not strong enough. :)
DeleteI will definitely be trying this! Thank you so much for sharing. I am always looking for new ways to make my hair grow faster!

:) Do you have any recommendations for oily skin?!
ReplyDeleteActually, dry skin!! sorry:)
ReplyDeleteI've never really dealt with dry skin personally so I'm afraid I don't have any recommendations.
DeleteHonestly it's enough to just make sure your diet is full of vitamins and protein. That's why pregnant ladies always seem to have pretty hair and nails, the prenatal vitamins and the fact that they tend to eat better and stay away from alcohol and such means their body is getting the nutrients it needs. Taking a daily multi-vitamin and eating a healthy, varied diet will go a long way in helping your hair grow faster and be stronger as well. I wouldn't recommend using lemon juice to lighten your hair, especially daily as it dries out your hair. If you do decide to use lemon, also invest in a deep conditioner for your hair so you can still get that effect without drying it out. Healthy hair always looks longer than brittle, dry hair.
ReplyDeleteNice post! Once you make sure the oil is not too hot for your hands or scalp,
ReplyDeletedivide your hair into segments on top of your hand and take the oil and massage it into your scalp in circular motions. This promotes blood flow and circulation and also helps to make your scalp stronger.

People who raise doubt in the minds of the people having to do with shampoo for natural hair. The curly hair products will be quite useful as well since there is a lot of confusion as to what people with hair that is not particularly straight will do. The natural hair weave is something that will make the hair look really natural. This is of course the duty of the company which is selling these products like the natural hair products.
